What’s a Refuge?

September 30, 2010 Donna New

Near the end of Proverbs, the book of wisdom, comes a guy to write in this book who says he has no wisdom. Does he have anything to contribute? Well, he actually does.

Proverbs 30:2-5

I am the least intelligent of men

And I lack man’s ability to understand,

I have not gained wisdom,

And I have no knowledge of the Holy One.

Who has gone up to heaven and come down?

Who has gathered the wind in his hands?

Who has bound up the waters in a cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name,

And what is the name of his Son –

If you know?

Every word of God is pure,

He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him

His first couple of lines show humility. None of us has wisdom without it is given of God. And we’re told in the New Testament to think of others as better than ourselves. Then his next line shows honesty. His lack of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One must cause him pain. It’s like a confession of his weakness. The waters and the ends of the earth we are inept to be responsible for the care of them. That’s something no one can do, not even the weatherman!

In the Bible a name shows a man’s character. What’s His character like? We, on this side of the Old Testament have the advantage of knowing the character of His Son His gentleness, His desire to heal, His fortitude in the Garden. And through that the character of the Father. However, we’ll be learning forever also.

We should hang on His every word. It’s like gold refined by fire. And it will make us pure.

I take refuge in my strong brothers. I have no husband and that’s not a complaint. I have so many men in my  life who care for me and watch after me. But my brothers are all three sweet and gentle and when I need a car fixed or financial advice or a meaningful story I go to one of them. They’re precious to me. God is like that. When we are in need He meets us there with practical answers, emotional answers and spiritual answers. He covers us to keep us safe from trouble and when we’re in trouble He’s a tender ear and shoulder to cry on. He’s our refuge.
