He Came Because

1 John 1:1 “[We are writing] about the Word of Life [in] Him Who existed from the beginning. Whom we have heard, Whom we have seen with our [own] eyes, Whom we have gazed upon [for ourselves] and have touched with our [own] hands.”

In the movie “A Beautiful Mind” John Nash a genius mathematician and a schizophrenic, is trying to figure out reality and he’s beginning to. He’s beginning to know his delusions from what is real. His wife, Alicia, needs “something extraordinary to happen.” She’s been through so much yet she’s willing to work with him still because she loves him. She sits down on her knees and he’s sitting on the bed and she says “You want to know what is real, this is real.” And her hand touches his face and she takes his hand to her face. “This is real. And John, the answer to our questions may not be in your head. (That’s where he solves every other problem.) Maybe the answer to our questions is here, in your heart.”

Jesus came in the flesh because that is our reality. He came so we could hear Him, gaze on Him with our own eyes, and touch Him with our hands. God from glory dropped down to flesh because we needed Him to.  We can understand a baby better than we can understand the Spirit. We can understand a man healed from leprosy so that we can understand love. We can understand in a small way His pain as He gave His life because we’ve all felt pain.

And the odd thing is He came down from sweet Heaven so He could feel our pain, know what it was to be poor, know what it was to be an outcast, know what it was to be hungry and thirsty. He came so we could understand the reality of God and so He would feel our reality.

In 1 John 1:1 John the Apostle was saying what Alicia was saying. He’s real, Jesus is real. We heard his voice, we gazed upon him, we touched Him with our hands. What a precious privilege to experience Jesus in the flesh…to know the reality of God. What a privilege to have a God who feels what we feel living in our hearts.
