A Mother Now

December 7, 2010 Donna New

And Joseph also went up from Galilee..to Bethlehem…to be enrolled with Mary, his espoused (married) wife, who was about to become a mother. Luke 2:4, 5

She was taking on a lot of responsibility now. Her baby would become her life for a while. She’d have to learn His cries, keep clean clothes on Him, feed Him at all hours of the night and day. She’d have to give Him a bath, keep His toenails clipped. There are so many details of motherhood and that’s not even half of them.

She’d be praying for him every day. And it was very important what she would sing to Him and what she taught Him. He was probably soaking up all she would say even when He was a baby.

Some say she was a 16 year old. She may not have been very experienced with children, the Bible doesn’t say. Either way she needed grace in raising her boy just like other mothers do….none of us is perfect. She needed grace to let go all those small and major times. She had to let go when He could walk by Himself, when he could feed Himself, dress Himself, when He was lost on the way home from the Temple and He said “I must be about my Father’s business.” That took a special grace to treasure something like that in her heart.

There was much more to being a mother of the Son of God. But I won’t go into it now because Christmas is a time of rejoicing about His birth. At 7 days old his mother and father took Him to the Temple to be circumcised. There was a man there named Simeon and a woman named Anna who rejoiced to finally get to hold the Messiah. They rejoiced but Simeon prophesied some powerful things Jesus would do. Joseph and Mary had a responsibility.

No matter what our calling we have the power to fulfill it in our God. That doesn’t mean it will be easy but we have Him in our heart to love us and wipe our tears and cheer us on. And we have His mercy there for the times we do what we shouldn’t do or don’t do what we should. He’s a gracious God.
