The Glory of Poverty

December 15, 2010 Donna New

Luke 2:9-12 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid. For look I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people; today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord was born to you in the city of David. This will be a sign for you; you will find the baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”

The glory of the Lord shone…and they were terrified. What if Jesus had come as a glorious King. Those of us who had needs would have been afraid to go before Him. Poor people would have been left out of the throne room. Sinners would have been shamed and  excluded.

Instead the angels calmed the Shepherds and said He’s just a baby, snugly wrapped warm, in an animals’ trough. That’s better. We can come to Him with the ugliness we have in our hearts, with our fear, with our hopes and be comfortable with this baby in the trough. He’s been rejected like us, no room at the inn. He’s in need like us. His need is being a human in poverty. Our need is sin. We can relate. We can trust Him. We can touch Him and be touched by Him.

One day He’ll come as a glorious, Warrior King. But for now He’s our Best Friend, Listening Ear, Wiper of Tears. His glory now is in His poverty and He did that for us.
