Point of Entry

January 20, 2011 Donna New

We are depraved and capable of horrendous sin, any of us. But I disagree with those who say there is no good in us. This is partly because of Scriptures like this and because of observation.

Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.” If you watch someone over the years there is kindness maybe in an angry man. Or there might be generosity in a loose woman. Even criminals sometimes love their children or are loyal to a friend.

I love watching the image of God in humans. We’re all a bit scruffy but we each bear His image. God wrote with His finger on our hearts a little quality of His. He chose to place beauty in us, not just like the flowers or the sky. But beauty of gentleness, or kindness, or grace. That kind of beauty is what I need from you and you need from me.

My brother deals with gang members in high school. They’re hard, beligerant, angry and callous. But that’s on first glance. Even most of the tough ones melt a little. How? Jimmy finds their inner child. Everyone has a hurt place that can be touched if you try. There’s the image of God in them that was broken at some point. Jimmy has a way with people that comes from God’s image in him and some training. But if we cared and took the time to see what’s going on in that angry man or that loose woman we might find a little tenderness in their heart.

To me that facet that He gave you or I is the place where we hunger for Him most, just to know God and I have something in common. If someone is going to find Him it’ll be because he sees in God qualities he admires and is comfortable with. And then he’ll see the rest of His infinite good. Just like the kid in the gang, his broken image of God is where we find the point of entry into his heart.

Thank you. You’re right. People may have some intellectual questions but it’s really about the place where they’re broken.
