Mercy and Comfort

January 22, 2011 Donna New

2 Corinthians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.” 2 Corinthians 1:4-5 goes on to say, and I paraphrase “If we’re hurt and we belong to Jesus then we’re comforted by Him as He sits by our side. But we’re comforted so we can go sit by someone else’s side and comfort their broken heart.” Words are sometimes out of place but our nearness is not nor is a listening ear.

My Grandmother passed away years ago and we had a funeral for her. That day I felt very sad and had a heavy heart. My sister-in-law came out of the funeral with tears in her eyes and that was such a comfort to me that my Grandma would mean that much to her. It made Grandma’s homegoing sweet to me instead of depressing and gloomy. So when you comfort someone don’t be afraid to shed a few tears.

Our heavenly Father is the God of mercy and comfort. The mercy in us and the comfort in us comes from Him. May He pour them out on us when we face our difficult moments and may He pour them through us when someone else faces theirs.
