A Horse

There was a horse named Sea Biscuit who was a thoroughbred race horse. She lost a couple of races and was hurt so her owner beat her and left her in the brush to die. A trainer who was old and no longer desirable in the racing world found her and nursed her to health. Somehow a man who wanted to race horses found the two of them and asked the trainer if Sea Biscuit was worth training. The old trainer said “Just because she’s beat up doesn’t mean you toss her out.” So they trained Sea Biscuit and worked with her. They found a young jockey down on his luck and he and the horse bonded immediately. He was perfect at getting her to do what she needed to do.

One day the trainer and the owner found out the jockey was blind in his left eye. He couldn’t watch the competition he was riding past. The trainer said “We can’t keep a jockey that lies!” The owner said “You don’t throw out a horse just because she’s been beat up.” They kept the jockey and he and the horse went on to win many races.

Some of us are pretty beat up. We have issues and problems and all kinds of reasons the Lord shouldn’t be able to use us. Paul did too. In 2 Corinthians he talks about a weakness that he begs God to take away. But God doesn’t seem to answer. Then He says, “My power is perfected in your weakness.” Somehow God works more freely through those of us who are less than perfect in the world’s eyes and in our own.

To be fair, God has powerfully used Joseph and Daniel, who seemed to have no major imperfections, and Jesus who had none. But He chases after the lost sheep, searches for the lost coin and throws a party for the prodigal son.

2 Corinthians 12:9 …for My strength and power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and show themselves most effective in [your] weakness. Therefore, I will all the more gladly glory in my weaknesses and infirmities that the strength and power of Christ (the Messiah) may rest (yes, may pitch a tent over and dwell) upon me!
